The Cosy Copy Clinic: What’s Missing From Your Website Bio?
You’ve written your website bio. You’ve edited it. You’ve stared at it for far too long. It sounds… fine. Maybe even polished.
But is it doing anything?
If your About Me page isn’t bringing in your kind of clients, or worse, if it’s getting clicks but no one sticks around it might not be saying the things people actually want to hear. That’s where the Cosy Copy Clinic comes in.
Let’s diagnose the common copy culprits hiding in your bio, and walk through how to fix them with warmth, clarity, and a little personality magic.
Symptom 1: The Identity Spiral
“Hi, I’m [Name] and I’m a passionate creative who loves helping people…”
This is the bio version of handing someone a cup of lukewarm tea and saying, “Enjoy!” It’s polite. Technically correct. But it doesn’t tell me anything about what makes you different or why I should stick around.
Cosy Fix:
Start with your reader. Then tell your story.
Instead of leading with:
“I’m a graphic designer based in Kent who loves clean lines and muted palettes…”
Try:
“If you’ve ever whispered ‘I want my brand to look like me, but better’—you’re in the right place.”
Then follow it with how you do that, who for, and why it matters.
Symptom 2: Too Much Origin Story, Not Enough Now
Yes, your journey is important. But if your entire bio is “how I got here,” you’re missing the part your audience actually cares about: what can you help them with?
Cosy Fix:
Weave the story through your current mission, not as a standalone tale.
Here’s the difference:
“After six years in corporate admin, I burned out, left my job, and taught myself design.”
“After six years of over-scheduling other people’s lives, I decided to start designing calmer, more joyful brands—ones that help small business owners like you actually breathe again.”
See the shift? Your background supports your purpose. But your audience stays centre stage.
Symptom 3: The Charm Vacuum
Sometimes bios get so caught up in sounding “professional” they forget to sound human. No quirks. No warmth. No tiny details that help someone go, “Ahh, yes. You’re my people.”
Cosy Fix:
Add one or two warm, specific touches. Not random facts. Connection-builders.
Instead of:
“I’m a dog mum who loves oat lattes and romcoms.”
Try:
“You’ll usually find me sketching with a cat on my lap and crumbs on my keyboard, because branding breakthroughs wait for no snack.”
That one sentence paints a picture. A slightly crumb-covered one, but a clear one.
Symptom 4: A Vanishing Voice
If your homepage is full of personality but your bio reads like a LinkedIn post, something’s off. Your About page is one of the only places where clients actively want to know who you are. Don’t disappear behind safe wording or generic structure. Show up.
Cosy Fix:
Match your tone of voice to the rest of your site. Keep things conversational, clear, and confident.
Example:
💤 Before:
“I’m committed to delivering high-quality design solutions tailored to meet the unique needs of each client.”
🌻 After:
“I design brands that feel like your favourite jumper: comfy, flattering, and 100% yours.”
Bonus Mistake: Forgetting the Call to Action
So they’ve read your lovely bio. They’re nodding. Maybe smiling. But then… nothing?
Cosy Fix:
End your About page with a clear, friendly invitation. Something like:
“Curious about working together? Start here.”
“Ready for a brand you’re proud of? Let’s chat.”
“Want a peek at how the magic happens? Head to my portfolio.”
No hard sell. Just a warm nudge toward the next step.
Case Study: The Bio That Didn’t Feel Like Her
One of my clients, a photographer called Ruby, had a beautifully shot site and a strong visual identity, but her bio was stiff and serious. She told me:
“I don’t sound like that in real life. But I didn’t want to sound unprofessional.”
We rewrote her bio to reflect her dry humour and warm tone. Swapped her intro from:
“I’ve been shooting weddings since 2015. My aim is to provide timeless images you’ll treasure forever.”
To:
“Since 2015, I’ve been quietly documenting the loudest, softest, most ridiculous, and most real moments of people’s lives. Usually while hiding behind a plant.”
Her enquiries didn’t just increase. Her ideal clients started finding her. People said, “I read your bio and knew you’d get us.” Which is kind of the whole point, isn’t it?
Don’t Be Afraid to Sound Like You
You don’t need to be loud. You don’t need to be quirky. But you do need to be real.
So if your website bio has lost its spark, ask yourself:
Is it clear who I help and how?
Does it sound like something I’d actually say?
Is it warm, specific, and a little bit memorable?
If not, time to cosy it up.
And if you’d like help with that? We’ve got something exciting newly launched in our little store:
